Over US$70,000 For Nimba Dispute
The Special Presidential Committee set up to look into the controversial land crisis in Nimba County says it has currently set aside the amount of US$ 70,844,000.00, to be used as an amount that will be disbursed to parties associated with various land cases in the county. A member of the committee told this paper that the amount in question would be used to pay some of the parties as a way of amicably and peacefully resolving the issue. A member of the Secretariat of the committee, Prince Forfor said the committee has been making frantic efforts to resolve the many land disputes in the county and so far, it has been able to resolve a total of 592 cases. He told our correspondent in Nimba that so far, the committee has been able to document 730 land cases in the county, but so far, it has succeeded in resolving 592 of them.
He said the Special Presidential Committee, which recently held a mass meeting with the citizens of the county drawn from all of the seven political districts in Sanniquellie said out of the many cases documented, the commercial city of Ganta alone has 280 cases but the committee was able to resolve 255 of them. He said two 212 cases were being registered for Saclepea, but the committee was able to resolve 175 of those cases. Mr. Forfor added that Karnplay, a border town with Ivory Coast has 53 land cases documented but so far 36 of them have been resolved, while Sanniquellie, the political capital of the county has 15 cases but 14 of them have been settled.
He further said Sokopa, an area between Bong and Nimba Counties has seven cases documented and the committee has resolved six of them. According to Mr. Forfor, 138 cases are still pending negotiation with both the complainers and respondents making claims and counterclaims. He however warned citizens of the county who are connected to the various land cases to remain patient as the government is doing every thing possible to resolve the many land cases in the county. He then urged Liberians to unite and forget about the past and forge ahead for the growth and development of the nation.
