Swedish Envoy Visits Defense
The new Swedish Ambassador accredited to Liberia, Carin Wall on Wednesday disclosed that democracy on human rights and agricultural development are the two priorities that her country will focus on in Liberia.Ambassador Wall who made the disclosure when she and her delegation paid a courtesy visit at the Ministry of National Defense in Monrovia stated that her country's focus on democracy and human rights would include a commitment to continue its support to the Armed Forces of Liberia, (AFL).According to the Swedish Ambassador, she will dialogue with the Government, through the Ministry of National Defense in order to arrive at the right choices on what they intend to do as it relates to identifying new operations and new activities under these sectors. Ambassador in a relaxed mood indicated that her country has good working relations with the Liberian Government and will continue to support the military, particularly on the Security Reform Sector. She said Sweden has been involved in supporting the security sector in a broader perspective and has assigned several of its security personnel to the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).
She further explained that her government will also work along with the Liberian Government to increase the quality of education in Liberia shortly and that she will work with the Minister of Defense, J. Brownie Samukai to support the Ministry's endeavor as they work to empower the AFL.Following her statement, the Minister of Defense, J. Brownie Samukai expressed satisfaction for the visit of the Ambassador and her team. He told a team of journalists that during their 30-minute closed door talks, their discussions were focused on cooperation in terms of partnership and means by which they could improve on the security reform in the country.He expressed the hope that the security sector in the country will also work in consolidating democracy and to improve on human rights as it relates to the rule of law and added that the Ministry is presently working to improve civil-army relationship in the country.
