Ganta Youth Plan Peaceful Demonstration if…

Reports reaching this paper suggest that some youth of Ganta Nimba County are said to be planning a peaceful demonstration in that part of the country if nothing is done to reclaim their property. One of the youth Mr. Sekou Donzo told this paper over the weekend that they have waited for too long following several decision reached by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Office of the City Mayor of Ganta in 2008 to reclaim their properties.  Emphasizing on the pending plan peaceful demonstration in Ganta Mr. Donzo averred that they would seek permission from the ministry of Justice prior to the march.

And that if permission is granted “Ganta Youths” would drive from Monrovia unto Ganta and parade the principle streets to prove a peaceful end to the land crisis indicating that it would mark a sound of solidarity for their peaceful return.  Explaining further he noted that since the cessation of hostilities in Liberia most of their brothers and sisters have returned home in other counties and asked why they should not return to Nimba?   Because of this, he said all would be done by the “Ganta Youth” to rally around local and international stakeholders for a resolution.  According to separate documents in the possession of this paper indicates that on February 18th 2008 a communication send to the City Mayor of Ganta Nohn Tensonneh bearing the signature of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Ambulai B. Johnson, Jr. stated that, “Cognizant of the negativity of this inhibition and the growing wave of land conflicts it has brought to Ganta, the Ad-hoc Presidential Commission on the Nimba County Inter – Ethnic land dispute has resolved to terminate squatters right privilege in Ganta City and directs that you implement the following” the letter read.

Minister Johnson letter further urged the Ganta City Mayor to revoke any and all squatters rights granted to individuals with immediate effect and that such person be immediately advise thru the mayor office that squatters rights privileges is no longer valid and they are to vacate those premises. In Minister Johnson third count position of his letter informed the city mayor that would be squatters' failure to vacate those premises will subject those to force removal. Concluding the minister letter added that “ due to the gravity of the situation on the ground the ministry of Public Works were ready to provide any assistance to facilitate the process.  He later attached a list of more than thirty affected individuals. Following the receipt of the communication from Internal Affairs Minister the City Mayor in a correspondence to squatters dated February 27th 2008 officially revoked all squatters' rights granted by the City Corporation.

Her communication further stated that said action must take effect immediately and that the proper owner of the land on which squatters resides, have shop etc. has all right to his/her property under the laws of Liberia. City Mayor Tensonneh communication further urged squatters to cooperate with the proper owner of the land on which they squart in a bid to avoid forceful removal as communicate in other letters for awareness.   Meanwhile, the City Mayor has furnished Mr. Benedict Flomo, Chairman, Gonpa City Corporation with copies of her communication. Others include: Mr. Robert S. Kamei, Former Superintendent Nimba County and Ima Sheriff, Chairman, technical Committee, Nimba Land and property Dispute.     In a related development Ganta youth in the America are said to be in solidarity with their counterparts in Liberia advocating for justice and peace following fourteen years of devasting civil crisis.
